About

Building Physics Engineer

Location: Blackburn

Salary: £35,000–£42,000, depending on experience

Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

The Role

We’re recruiting for a technically strong Building Physics Engineer to join an established energy and sustainability consultancy based in Blackburn.

This is a specialist, hands-on technical role focused on building energy modelling, dynamic thermal simulation, Building Regulations Part L compliance and overheating assessments across a varied portfolio of residential and commercial developments.

Previous experience producing CIBSE TM technical assessments and documentation is essential. The successful candidate must be confident undertaking building performance assessments, developing energy models and producing accurate, technically robust reports to support project compliance and design decisions.

You’ll manage projects from initial modelling through to reporting, working closely with clients, architects and multidisciplinary design teams to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and run dynamic thermal simulation models using IES VE or DesignBuilder.

• Produce CIBSE TM59 and/or TM52 overheating assessments, including technical reports and supporting documentation.

• Undertake CIBSE TM54 operational energy assessments, where applicable.

• Carry out Part L compliance modelling using SBEM and dynamic simulation methodologies.

• Produce BRUKL reports and associated Building Regulations compliance documentation.

• Undertake detailed building performance calculations, including heat loss, heat gain and U-value assessments.

• Analyse modelling outputs, interpret results and identify opportunities to improve energy performance and thermal comfort.

• Prepare technical reports, energy strategies and supporting documentation for planning and Building Regulations submissions.

• Provide technical advice to clients, architects, building services engineers and wider design teams.

• Respond to technical queries and contribute to design reviews and project meetings.

• Manage project workloads, technical deliverables and deadlines independently.

• Undertake technical checking and peer review to maintain the accuracy and quality of project outputs.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and relevant industry standards.

Essential Requirements

To be considered, you must have:

• A degree in Building Physics, Building Services Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related technical discipline.

• At least two years’ UK consultancy experience in building physics, energy modelling or a closely related discipline.

• Practical experience producing CIBSE TM technical assessments and documentation. This is an essential requirement.

• Hands-on experience using IES VE or DesignBuilder for dynamic thermal simulation and building energy modelling.

• A sound working knowledge of UK Building Regulations Part L and associated compliance processes.

• Practical experience undertaking TM59 and/or TM52 overheating assessments.

• The ability to interpret modelling results and produce clear, accurate and technically robust reports.

• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage your own projects.

• Good communication skills and confidence engaging with clients and design teams.

• A full UK driving licence.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

• Experience undertaking TM54 operational energy assessments.

• Low Carbon Consultant (LCC) or Low Carbon Energy Assessor accreditation, or working towards accreditation.

• Experience preparing energy and sustainability statements for planning applications.

• BREEAM-related project experience.

• SAP or non-domestic EPC accreditation.

• Relevant CIBSE membership or ongoing professional development.

What’s on Offer?

• Salary of £35,000–£42,000, depending on experience.

• Permanent, full-time employment.

• A varied portfolio of residential and commercial building projects.

• Technical ownership of projects and direct involvement with clients and design teams.

• Support with CPD, professional development and industry accreditations.

• Opportunities to progress your technical expertise and career.

• A friendly, collaborative working environment with access to experienced senior colleagues.

How to Apply

If you’re an experienced Building Physics Engineer or Energy Consultant with a strong technical background in dynamic simulation, thermal modelling and CIBSE TM assessments, we’d like to hear from you.

Please note: Experience producing CIBSE TM technical assessments and documentation is essential for this position.
