Job description

About

Ambitious Precision Agriculture Engineer wanted to drive real impact in AgriTech from Edinburgh.

Scottish farming is under pressure to produce more with less land, less water and tighter margins. An established AgriTech SME based in Edinburgh is tackling that problem with sensor networks, satellite imagery and data-driven field management, and it's grown enough to need another engineer who can turn agronomic questions into working systems. This Precision Agriculture Engineer role sits at the point where hardware, data and real farms meet.

Here's what you'll be doing:

Design and deploy field sensor arrays that capture soil moisture, nutrient levels and crop health data

Build and refine the algorithms that turn raw sensor readings into actionable yield and irrigation recommendations

Calibrate GPS-guided equipment and variable-rate application systems for on-farm trials

Process satellite and drone imagery to map field variability across client sites

Work directly with farm managers to interpret data outputs and adjust systems based on real-world feedback

Document system performance and feed findings back into the next hardware or software iteration

Here are the skills you'll need:

A degree in agricultural engineering, computer science, or a related technical field

Hands-on experience with IoT sensors, GPS systems, or agricultural machinery

Comfortable working with Python or similar for data analysis and automation

A genuine interest in farming systems, not just the engineering side of it

Strong communication skills. You'll need to explain technical findings to people who aren't engineers

Able to travel to field sites around Edinburgh and the wider Scottish Lowlands as needed

Key perks and benefits:

£39,000 to £52,500, depending on experience, plus a bonus scheme

Private medical insurance and solid pension contributions

Hybrid working, with time split between the Edinburgh office, the lab and field visits

Generous annual leave and flexible working hours built around the seasons

Structured progression within a growing company. Defined career paths, not vague promises

Why pursue a career in AgriTech?

AgriTech is one of the few sectors where an engineer can watch their work change something tangible within a growing season. Edinburgh has become a genuine hub for this kind of innovation, with strong links between the city's research institutions and Scotland's agricultural heartland. Demand for engineers who can bridge data science and real-world farming is only going to grow, and the people who get in now will shape what the sector looks like in ten years.
