Job description

About

Ambitious Smart Farming Software Engineer wanted to drive real impact in AgriTech from Birmingham.

UK farming is under pressure to produce more from less, and the software behind precision agriculture is where that pressure gets solved. This established SME builds smart farming technology used by growers who need real data, not guesswork, to make decisions in the field. They're growing, well past the startup scramble, but still small enough that one engineer's code ships and matters.

Here's what you'll be doing:

Build and maintain software that processes sensor and satellite data for smart farming applications

Design APIs and backend services that connect field hardware to farmer-facing dashboards

Write clean, tested code for data pipelines handling soil, weather and crop yield inputs

Debug production issues across the stack, from device connectivity to cloud infrastructure

Collaborate with agronomists and product managers to translate farming needs into working features

Review pull requests and contribute to technical decisions as the platform scales

Here are the skills you'll need:

Solid commercial experience in a modern language such as Python, Java or C#

Comfort working with APIs, databases and cloud platforms (AWS or Azure preferred)

Some exposure to IoT data, geospatial data, or agricultural/environmental systems is a bonus, not a requirement

Ability to work through ambiguous problems without needing every detail handed to you

Clear communication skills. You'll need to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues

Genuine curiosity about how technology changes an industry as old as farming itself

Key perks and benefits:

Salary of £35,500 to £54,000, depending on experience

Hybrid working, splitting time between home and the Birmingham office

Private medical insurance and pension contribution

Annual leave plus flexible working arrangements

Bonus scheme and genuine professional development opportunities

Why pursue a career in AgriTech?

AgriTech is one of the few sectors where software directly affects food security, and that gives the work weight. Birmingham has quietly become a strong base for this kind of engineering, close to the farms the technology serves and the talent pool that builds it. Get in now as a Smart Farming Software Engineer and you're building career capital in a field that's only going to matter more.
