Job description

About

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title:  Midwifery Matron - Community Services

Contract Type: Fixed Term 12 months

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team for an experienced and inspirational midwifery leader as a Midwifery Matron for Inpatient Services on a 12-month fixed-term, part-time basis, of 18.5hrs a week.

Working alongside the existing Inpatient Services Midwifery Matron, you will provide visible leadership across our inpatient maternity services, supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality care for women, birthing people, babies and families. We are seeking a passionate leader who can support staff to thrive, promote a positive culture, and drive continuous improvement. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and operational colleagues to ensure inpatient services remain safe, effective, responsive and patient-centred.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a significant contribution to the leadership and development of our inpatient maternity services while benefiting from the flexibility of a job-share arrangement. You will join a forward-thinking maternity leadership team committed to safety, kindness, inclusivity and delivering the best possible outcomes and experiences for women, babies and families.

Alongside the contracted hours for the role, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the maternity manager on-call rota, providing senior operational and professional leadership support outside of normal working hours.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

UHS Maternity is a fast-paced progressive service with just over 5000 births every year. The successful candidate will be actively involved in operational leadership and will be a key influencer to ensure the provision of safe, effective, and evidence-based midwifery care for service users and families.

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:

•    Providing visible clinical and operational leadership across inpatient maternity services.

•    Supporting the delivery of high-quality, safe and personalised care for women, birthing people and families.

•    Promoting compliance with national standards, regulatory requirements and local quality objectives.

•    Supporting effective patient flow and operational performance across inpatient areas.

•    Leading, motivating and developing maternity teams to achieve excellence in care delivery.

•    Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to improve outcomes and experiences for families.

•    Contributing to service transformation, innovation and the implementation of national maternity priorities.

•    Supporting workforce planning, staff wellbeing, recruitment and retention initiatives.
