What will I be doing?

As a golf greenkeeper at the Carlyon Bay Golf Course you will be responsible for the overall maintenance, presentation, and health of a golf course. The job combines horticulture, environmental management, mechanics, and heavy physical labor.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the tasks a greenkeeper performs:

Course Setup & Presentation

Changing holes: Cutting new holes on the greens and moving the flagpins to prevent turf wear.

Tee marker placement: Moving tee markers daily to ensure even wear on the teeing areas.

Raking bunkers: Maintaining sand traps by raking them, smoothing out footprints, and managing bunker edges.

Marking hazards: Installing and maintaining hazard stakes (out of bounds, water hazards).

Turf Management & Agronomy

Mowing turf: Cutting different areas of the course to highly specific heights (greens, tees, fairways, semi-rough, and rough) using specialized ride-on and walk-behind mowers.

Aeration: Punching holes in the turf (hollow tining, solid tining, or vertidraining) to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots.

Topdressing: Spreading sand or a sand-mix over the greens to smooth the surface and improve drainage.

Weed and pest control: Applying fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides to protect the grass from diseases, pests, and invasive weeds.

Irrigation management: Operating, monitoring, and repairing automated watering systems to keep the grass hydrated without overwatering.

Equipment & Infrastructure Maintenance

Machinery maintenance: Cleaning, oiling, and performing basic safety checks on tractors, mowers, and utility vehicles before and after use.

Blade sharpening: Ensuring mower cylinders and blades are perfectly sharp to avoid tearing the grass.

Drainage work: Installing and unblocking drainage pipes to prevent the course from flooding during heavy rain.

Landscaping & Environmental Work

Tree and hedge care: Pruning trees, cutting hedges, and clearing fallen branches or leaves across the estate.

Divot repairing: Filling holes on fairways and tees made by golfers' clubs with a seed and soil mixture.

Ecology management: Managing wildlife habitats, wetlands, and wildflower areas to encourage biodiversity.
