Sustainability Communications & Engagement Officer
Are you a communications professional with an interest in sustainability, behaviour change and engagement? Do you enjoy turning complex ideas into clear, engaging stories that help people understand what’s changing and why it matters? We have an exciting opportunity to join us as a Sustainability Communications & Engagement Officer, supporting sustainability and estates communications at the University of Sheffield.
About the role
You will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day communications and engagement activity that underpins the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and wider estates projects. Working as part of the Sustainability and Estates Communications team, you will help staff and students understand sustainability priorities, see progress being made across campus, and engage with initiatives that support positive change.
This is a varied and collaborative role that sits at the intersection of sustainability, communications and engagement. You will work closely with colleagues across Estates and Facilities Management, Corporate Communications, academic departments and the Students’ Union, helping to ensure sustainability-related activity is communicated clearly, consistently and accessibly.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you will:
● Create engaging content for websites, social media, newsletters and campaigns that showcases sustainability and estates activity.
● Support sustainability engagement initiatives across schools, faculties and professional services, helping to share good practice and celebrate success.
● Help coordinate events, campaigns and communications that encourage sustainable behaviours and ways of working.
● Maintain and update sustainability webpages and digital channels.
● Support sustainability governance and reporting by preparing meeting papers, tracking actions and collating information for progress updates.
● Work with data in a practical way, using spreadsheets to organise, summarise and present information clearly.
● Support communications for wider estates projects, particularly those linked to sustainability, decarbonisation and campus change.
About you
You’re someone who enjoys working with people, ideas and information, and you’re motivated by work that has real-world impact. You don’t need to be a sustainability specialist, but you do need a genuine interest in environmental issues and the confidence to communicate clearly and thoughtfully.
You will have:
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Experience creating content for digital channels such as websites or social media.
● Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
● A collaborative approach and confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders.
It would also be an advantage if you have:
● Experience supporting data reporting or presentations using spreadsheets such as Excel or Google Sheets.
● Awareness of behaviour change or organisational culture, with experience contributing to engagement or communications activity.
About the team
You will join the Sustainability Communications & Engagement team which works as part of a wider team of sustainability, energy and environmental professionals within Estates and Facilities Management. The team works across the University to support sustainability strategy delivery, estates communications and engagement, helping to connect strategic priorities with day-to-day activity on campus. You’ll be part of a supportive, friendly team with a strong sense of purpose and opportunities to develop your skills.
